Obituary

Angela Canizaro, 91, of Vicksburg, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, at the Vicksburg Convalescent  Home. She was born on November 11, 1933, and was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Angela was a 1951 graduate of Saint Francis Xavier Academy, or as she referred to it, "The Sisters' School." She worked for many years in the insurance industry. A lifelong member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Angela served as a member of the Altar Society and Choir in addition to being a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years. She held her Catholic faith and church community in high importance, apparent by her attendance at daily Mass for most of her 91 years. In 2023, she was recognized by the Catholic Diocese of Jackson with the 'Bishop Chanche Mission Award' for her exemplary service of evangelization, faith formation, and service to the parish community.

As a competitive bridge player, she enjoyed participating in many bridge clubs over the years. A devoted sports fan, Angela especially loved cheering for the New Orleans Saints. Proud of her independence, she lived alone and drove herself and friends around town until the beginning of 2025.

Angela cherished time spent with her family and friends. Throughout her lifetime, she served as a caregiver to both young and old.

Angela was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lena Canizaro; her brother, James Canizaro; and her sisters, Concetta DeRossette and Mattie Canizaro, as well as her nephew, Frank DeRossette, and her great-nephew, Christopher DeRossette.

Although Angela never had children of her own, she helped raise her ten nieces and nephews and their children, and felt they all belonged to her. She is survived by three nieces, Angela Thomson (Ralph), Donna Hopkins, and Janet Jackson, and six nephews, Wally DeRossette (Denise), Patrick DeRossette (Sylvia), Jamie DeRossette (Theresa), Tim DeRossette (Lucy), Brian DeRossette (Betty), and Matthew DeRossette (Sally). She is also survived by 27 great-nieces and nephews, 28 great-great-nieces and nephews, her first cousin Susan Signa, and several other Signa and Canizaro cousins.

The family extends gratitude to the healthcare providers and staff of Vicksburg Convalescent Home and St. Joseph Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.

A visitation will be held at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Avenue, on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Paul Catholic Church.
