Dorothy Kenna Brasfield passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the home of a granddaughter in Vicksburg.  She was 90 years young.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Blanchard Hobson Kenna and Irene Newman Kenna as well as her husband F.E. Brasfield Jr., a daughter, Jane and her brother James Kenna (U.S. Air force – Retired).  She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Brasfield Vinson of Atlanta, GA and Dorothy Jean Brasfield Blakeney of Edwards, MS as well as 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Dorothy was born and raised in Jackson, MS and spent most of her adult life in Edwards, MS.  As a high school senior, Dorothy was the first-place winner of the very first concerto competition in Mississippi.  She went on to obtain a degree in music from Belhaven College and later a Master of Music degree from Jackson State University.   She was a long-term musician, pianist and organist for Edwards Presbyterian Church and eventually became the organist/choirmaster at The Church of the Holy Trinity in Vicksburg, MS.  She was a music educator, teaching in both Hinds and Warren County school districts and was heavily involved in multiple activities such as Director of Mississippi Sings, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, the Jackson Opera Guild, the Jackson Music Association and the Conservatory of Fine Arts in Vicksburg.  During her career, she has been responsible for exposing more than 100,000 Mississippians to the fine arts.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of The Holy Trinity in Vicksburg on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 1:00 PM.  Graveside services will be at the Edwards Cemetery at 3:30 PM.
