Dorothy Jean Chu, 88, passed away Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Heritage House Retirement Center in Vicksburg, MS. She was born November 27, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Beatrice Chin Chu and the late Shik Chu. Dorothy and the family moved from New York to Vicksburg in 1947 where they owned and operated a family run grocery store. She attended Vicksburg Public Schools and graduated from Carr Central High School in 1952. She was a Baptist at heart and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vicksburg. Dorothy was a Republican through and through and loved to talk politics.
Dorothy received her bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago, master's degree from the University of Illinois, and attended the New Yock City College. She started her work career as a Graphic Artist in Chicago, IL, for a nation-wide magazine company. Later she moved to New York City to become a Social Services Consultant for NYC Department of Social Services. She was awarded a scholarship to New York City College to advance herself in the Department. Dorothy retired around 2000 and began her travel career with her mom, brother Robert, sister Eltha, and nephews Gregory and Richard. She later moved to Norfolk, VA to take care of her brother and later her mom. Following the passing of both her mother and then her brother, Dorothy decided to move back to Vicksburg in 2014 and called Joe and Judy Tom to find her an apartment and eventually settled into the Heritage House Retirement Center.
Dorothy leaves behind her younger sister Eleanor Chu (Dr. Stanley Wong) Wong of Santa Cruz, CA; her youngest sister Eltha Chu (the late Paul Wong) Wong of Arlington Heights, IL and now Vicksburg, MS; her nieces Melissa (Kurt) Pfluger and Melinda (Eric) Gonzalez of CA; her nephew Richard Wong of Bloomington, IL; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Shik and Beatrice Chin Chu; her brother Robert Chu; her brother-in-law Paul Wong; and her nephew Gregory Wong.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2023 at 11 a.m. in Vicksburg, MS at the Cedar Hill Cemetery (Directions: Third gate off Sky Farm Avenue, turn left on 15 th Street, then right on K Street).
The Reverend Tommy Miller will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Joe Tom, Sr.; Joe Tom, Jr.; Sam Wong; Minor Ferris; Chris Madison; and Clyde McGehee.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Heritage House Retirement Center and the Nursing Center, Dr. Brian Shockley, Dr. Russell Barnes, and Judy and Joe Tom.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
