Dorothy Elizabeth
Wood Lack
September 2, 1926 – April 23, 2020
Dorothy Elizabeth Wood Lack, 93, passed away on April 23, 2020 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Dorothy was born on September 2, 1926, in Loscoe, Derbyshire. She met her future husband, US Army Air Forces Staff Sergeant Denson Lack, who was stationed at Polebrook, England, while standing in line at a movie theatre in Nottingham, England. They were married on July 4, 1944. Dorothy sailed to New York in 1945, crossing the Atlantic along with sixty-two other war brides and numerous wounded servicemen returning home. Traveling cross-country by train, she arrived in Vicksburg in time to celebrate her first wedding anniversary during her new hometown's renewal of Independence Day festivities.
Having grown up a very proper British young lady she was always called Dorothy. But as an English war bride in the more relaxed atmosphere of America, most everyone called her Dot. But the transition did not change who she was or would become, a witty, kindhearted, loving mother and granny.
Until she retired, Dot was an assistant trust officer with Merchants National Bank in Vicksburg. Her boss referred to her as the "foreign department" because, at the request of her father, she never gave up her British passport or citizenship.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband Denson of Vicksburg, son David of Starkville, parents Joseph and Margaret Wood and sister Margaret Valerie Wood Luckett all of Loscoe, Derbyshire.
She is survived by son Richard Alan Lack and wife Maureen of Vicksburg; daughters Carole Christine Lack Moak and husband Jim of Raymond, Bonnie Jean Lack Lane and husband Richard of Vicksburg, Margaret Elizabeth Lack Stroud and husband Doug of Madison and daughter-in-law Susan Shira Lack of Starkville. She was a beloved Granny to Andrea Lane Daniel and husband Terry of Crich, Derbyshire, Rob Lane and wife Jayne of Loscoe, Derbyshire, Philip Moak of Raymond, Jennifer Moak of Raymond, Katie Stroud Graves and husband Brooks of Madison, Tyler Lack and wife Danyele of Vicksburg, Kristin Chatelain and Lacey Chatelain of Vicksburg and Haley McCarty and husband Warren of Dallas and great-grandchildren, Jaden, Collin, Christopher, Alyssa Claire, Dade, Jaxon, Maeve, Rowan, and Maren.
The family is grateful for the kindness and support provided by all of her caregivers, especially hospice caregivers Holly and Sharon. A private graveside service will be held on April 25, 2020. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Dementia (MIND) Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (https://www.umc.edu/mindcenter/MIND-CENTER-Home-page.html) or Kare-In-Home Ministries (kihministries.com).
