Heber Kimball
Mccain
December 16, 1947 – November 6, 2020
Heber was the seventh child born to Buford B. McCain and Lena Mae Herndon McCain, on a cold December day, in Memphis Tennessee. His siblings Buddy, Norma, Betty, Reta, Don, Nita, Patti, and Donna Sue loved spending time with him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was so fun to be with. He especially loved to tell funny stories. No matter how many times he told them, we always found them hilarious.
Heber attended Frayser High School, in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduation, in June 1966, he joined the Air Force and spent time in Viet Nam, serving his country and his God. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal, on March 1, 1969, for distinguished services as an aircraft mechanic (from January 12, 1968 to December 1968). This honor included his "outstanding professional skill and initiative in identifying and solving numerous problems encountered in the accomplishment of his duties. The energetic application of his knowledge played a significate role in contributing to the success of the United States Force." During his Viet Nam service he was given four more medals:
NDSM - National Defense Service Medal awarded for active duty personnel who have given honorable service during dates of conflict.
VSM - Viet Nam Service Medal awarded for aiding that country in a conflict
RVCM - Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal awarded for direct conflict support
AFGCM - Air Force Good Conduct Medal for exemplary conduct for a three year period
Upon his return home to Memphis, he hired on at Firestone Tire and Rubber where he worked for 15 years, until it closed in that area.
In 1970, Rebecca (Becky) Jones moved to Arkansas with her family. Soon after, she and Heber met at Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). Finally, Heber (who had been patiently waiting) knew he had met the love of his life…our sweet Becky was joyfully welcomed into the McCain family. Heber and Becky were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 30, 1971, and raised a beautiful and talented family of four children (Will, Mike, Kim and Jason). He was also blessed with eight grandchildren (his greatest joy in life): Micah and Keira (Will's children), Tyler (Mike's son), Shelby Elizabeth and Patrick McDaniel (Kim's children) and Lola, Ruby and Julien (Jason's children).
When Firestone closed its doors, Heber needed to find a new way to support his family.
He went to Memphis State University – Center for Nuclear Studies and graduated from that program on November 4, 1983. With degree in hand, he hired on at Entergy Grand Gulf Nuclear Station as a Nuclear Operator in April 1984, and moved his family to Vicksburg, Mississippi. He liked to say he was a "Nuclear Scientist", but was corrected by his young grandson Tyler: "Poppie, you do not even have a lab coat!"
Heber received many awards in his job at Grand Gulf. He was recognized as a "Nuclear Award Winner" in 1992 for saving a life. On his way to work, he came upon an accident and stopped to help. He administered first aid and kept the victim conscious until the ambulance arrived. Then, he accompanied the driver of the car to the hospital for treatment and saw that he made it safely home upon his release from the hospital. "His willingness to help and his ability to take appropriate actions admitted Heber McCain to the ranks of Peak Performers." For his work ethic and abilities on the job, he also received a Peak Performer award in 1993. Heber was also a certified Industrial Fire Fighter. After almost 29 years, he retired on January 1, 2013.
Heber was always involved in Scouting, and he loved to teach Primary Children at church. He loved to spend time with his sons, especially so with Mike, to pass along his knowledge and understanding on a plethora of topics…how to take care of your home, your car, how to tease you wife, how to tell jokes, etc. He loved to listen to Christian and Gospel music…from the Tabernacle Choir to Alan Jackson. However, his favorite hobby was researching cars/trucks (anything with wheels), driving cars/trucks, buying and selling cars/trucks, cleaning cars/trucks, etc., etc.
Heber loves his family and is now joyously spending time with those who preceded him in death: Buford McCain (Father), Lena McCain (Mother), B. Nolan (Buddy) McCain, Norma Faye McCain Hatch. Most recently preceding him in death was his 41 year old son, Baby Jase (Jason Alan).
Heber is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Becky) Jones McCain, his sons, William Joseph, and Christopher Michael and his daughter, Kimberly McCain McDaniel.
He is also survived by his siblings, Betty Francis McCain McCoy, Reta Mae McCain Berry, Donald Leon McCain, Georgia Juanita McCain Garrett, Patricia Lynn McCain Crunk and Donna Sue McCain Hawkins along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
His wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and a whole list of nieces, nephews and friends will always remember his joy in life and his love of laughter. Goodbye Heber, until we meet again at Jesus' feet.
