Rev. Dr. Joe Landrum died unexpectedly at Vicksburg Merit Health Hospital on September 4, 2022. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Hawkins United Methodist Church, 3736 Halls Ferry Road, Vicksburg, MS, with visitation beginning at noon. This service will be live streamed on www.hawkinsumc.org. Graveside interment will be held on Friday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Ellison United Methodist Church, 36 Brown Road, Vaughan, MS.
Joe grew up in Picayune, MS working in his family's produce business. He graduated from Picayune High School and the Mississippi Highway Patrol Academy and received a BA degree from William Carey College, a Master of Divinity from Emory University, and a Doctorate in Counseling Supervision from Mississippi State University.
After several years in law enforcement, Joe felt called into ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church. He spent 40 years serving as pastor in United Methodist churches throughout Mississippi. His appointments included: Scooba & Binnsville; Leakesville; Jackson-Trinity; Meridian-Andrew Chapel; Vicksburg-Redbone; Carrollton Charge; Dekalb Circuit; Madison UMC; 1st UMC Canton & Thornton Chapel; Crystal Springs UMC; 1st UMC Corinth; Natchez-Lovely Lane; Lorman-Cane Ridge and Blue Hill. He also served God in his work with the Vicksburg-West Jackson District and through various committees and institutions including The Good Shepherd Community Center in Vicksburg, Board of Pensions, Camp Wesley Pines, Board of Ministry, Professional Health Network Board, and as Board President of the Methodist Foundation of Mississippi.
Joe loved to share stories and to embellish them each time he told them. His listening ear, wisdom and friendship made a difference in the lives of many people. He will be missed.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Joe Ree Landrum, his brother, Jerry Landrum and father-in-law, Rev William (Bill) Watkins.
Joe is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rev. Vicki Watkins Landrum; mother-in-law, Meta Dixon Watkins; sisters-in-law: Kris Landrum and Alice Watkins Rein; brother-in-law, Joey Rein; nephews: Norman (Claudia) Landrum, Ernie (Laura Ann) Landrum, Joseph (Rebecca) Rein, and Richard Rein. Niece: Annabelle (Scott) Alsobrooks. Great nephews and great niece: Cayne (Emily) Landrum, Carson Landrum, Aiden Alsobrooks, Sam Landrum, Sydney Landrum and great-great niece Avery Ryane Landrum.
