John Herman Williams, 92, died July 24, 2021, in Hattiesburg, MS. He was born in Vicksburg, Ms on March 1, 1929, to D.H. and Susan Turner Williams. He graduated Carr Central High School in 1947. Herman attended Abilene Christian College but earned his degree in Library Science at the University of Texas. During the Korean Conflict he entered the Army on November 17, 1950, and was honorably discharged on November 10, 1952. In his last days he was still most actively thinking of his future and had recently filled out his application to receive VA benefits. Herman spent his time in the Army in Germany which sparked a life long love of world wide traveling. Living in New York for most of his adult life he worked for the IRS and as a law librarian for several different firms. Herman was inquisitive and an avid reader. He had a wealth of knowledge about world history and could converse capably on most any current event. Having a wonderful singing voice, he truly enjoyed the opera and live performances. Herman delighted in fine dining and handsome clothing.
He moved back to Vicksburg in 2019, to be a help for his sister, Nancy Mumper, at the Heritage House and lived there until after her death. Later that same year he moved to Hattiesburg and lived at The Claiborne until his passing. Mr. Williams was the last living of his brothers, George Williams, D.T. Williams, James Melvin Williams, and sisters, Rebecca Biedenharn, Nancy Mumper, Hilda White, Francis "Coot" Williams, and Betty Sue Wilkerson. He is survived by nieces, Carolyn Biedenharn, Gayle Biedenharn Walker(Neal), Judy Biedenharn, Pat Williams Hartley(Odie), Betty"Winkie"Williams Mangum(Jim), Gwen White Byrd(Ronald), Nancy Williams Fines, Ann Williams Palermo(Don), Sarah Williams Barber, Brenda Wilkerson Koestler(Charles), and nephews, George Williams Jr.(Colleen), Charlie White(Patricia), David Wilkerson, and Richard Wilkerson(Ruth) plus a multitude of great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, July 30, at Fisher Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Avenue in Vicksburg with Charlie White and Don Palermo officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11am with the service beginning at 11am, graveside service will follow. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The Salvation Army. John Herman Williams respected this ministry above all others.
