Joseph Burns Scott, Jr., a Bovina-Vicksburg resident, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at his home following a brief illness and complications. He was 93. Born in Vicksburg on April 11, 1924, Joe attended the Catholic schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 serving in World War II on the USS Curtis in the South Pacific where he was injured during a kamikaze attacknear Okinawa. After his service in the Navy, he served in the Mississippi National Guard. Joe served one year in the Korean War. After Korea, Joe worked briefly with Sonny Puckett doing odd jobs before working over 35 years at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station (WES)Transportation Branch. Joe was married to Mamie Grace Brown Scott for over 66 years before her passing on April 25, 2015. Joe and Grace were active members of the Bovina United Methodist Church since 1962. They met on a blind date and rode the city bus to work and on dates until Joe earned enough money to buy a carand then they married. Joe was activeand President ofthe Vicksburg Riding Club and had participated in several rodeos and quarter horse events over the years. They also helped organize the Warren County Posse for Paul Barrett and Martin Pace. They operated the Scott Ranch, raising horses and cattle for over 60 years. Grace always said that there was little spare time on the farm, but the horses were a binding family activity through the Scott's family life and grandchildren. Horses were a big family activityin their lives. He was talented at making saddles, belts and fixing everyone else's leather problems. He is survived by his sisters, Belle Larett (Curtis) of Baton Rouge, LA; and Jo Ann Knight (Cecil) of Brandon, FL; one son, Timothy Ray Scott of Vicksburg; two granddaughters, Dawn Michelle Scott Sanderson (Andy) and Monica Elaine Scott Rickels; two grandsons, CalebLangford and Nicholas Ray Scott; three great-grandchildren, Madeline Sanderson, Abigail Rickels and Brayden Rickels. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Burns Scott, Sr. and Annie Elizabeth Lane Scott; his wife, Mamie Grace Brown Scott; his brother, John David Scott; and sisters, Margie Wally and Jane Wiggins; and son, Joseph Randolph Scott. Pallbearers will be Todd Sullivan, Curtis Lauret, Charles Lauret, Michael Lauret, Butch Landers,Caleb Langford and Wesley Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Cecil Knight, Jack Fowler, Dr. Walter Johnston, Jr., Martin Pace andthe Warren County Sheriff'sOffice Personnel. Services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. John Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. on Saturday until the hour of service at the funeral home.
