August 16, 1943 – October 8, 2020
Katherine Sawyer Long passed on Tuesday October 8, 2020 at home with her family by her side. She was 77. Born in Hermanville, MS and a long time resident of Vicksburg, MS until her recent move to Alabama with her son. She held a degree from Mississippi College for Women and was a retired Botanist for the US Army Corps of Engineers. She was a member of Redbone United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jessie Sawyer; her husband, Dr. Horace T Long; her step-sons, Eric Christopher Long and Richard Anthony Long; and her step-daughter, Helen Margaret Long. She is survived by her sons James Michael Long (Kay) and John Mark Long; her step-daughter, Elizabeth Ann Long; her grandchildren: Amanda Paige Hamm (Jay), Jessie Magan Long, Bethany Lynnette Foster, Joseph Michael Long, and Morgan Rogillio; her great-grandchildren, Jaxon Hamm and Remi Hamm; a half-sister, Helen Maxey; and a half-brother, Robert Jobe.
Services will be held at 11 AM Redbone United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 located at 43 Burnt House Road Vicksburg, MS 39180. Visitation will be held from 9AM until the hour of service. Interment will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, MS.
Her Pallbearers are: Bob Hudson, Tim McKinney, Kelly Landers, Jay Hamm, Jesse Duncan, and Joseph Long.
In leu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Honor of her great-grandson, Jaxon Hamm, www.heroes.stjude.org/teamhammbone
