Mary Catherine
Atwood
September 28, 1938 – January 21, 2022
Mary Catherine Wood Atwood went to her heavenly home on January 21, 2022. She was 83 years old. She was born on September 28, 1938 in Jackson, MS to the Rev. W.H. and Ora Wood. Mary was their eighth and youngest child. Her parents and seven siblings all preceded her in death.
Mary went to Central High School and soon after graduation, she married Rhue Atwood. She was a loving mother to their three children, Ellen, Dennis and Gail. Rhue preceded her in death four years ago.
She worked as a secretary at the MS Baptist Convention Board, Midway Baptist Church, MS College and Jr. Achievement of Jackson.
Mary had many God given talents and one was that of a giver. She served as a Sunday School teacher to a ladies class at Midway Baptist Church in Jackson and a couples class at Crossway Church in Vicksburg. She also loved to sing in the church choir and was a member of the Midway Ladies Sextet. Mary was blessed with so many friends. If you were a friend of her, then you were friends for life.
Her five grandchildren were her biggest blessing; they called her Nana. She loved spending time with them more than anything else. Mary enjoyed reading. She could read a book faster than most. For the last year of her life, she lived at Brookdale Assisted Living in Clinton.
Mary is survived by her children, Ellen Magee, Dennis Atwood (Ann) and Gail Atwood; her grandchildren, Brent McAlpin (Karri), Jana Lawyer (Carter), Dylan, Cole and Noah Atwood and numerous nieces and nephews. Her heart belonged to her heavenly Father and there is no doubt that when she saw Him, he said, "Well done my good and faithful servant."
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25 at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Avenue. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the hour of service. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brent McAlpin, Dylan Atwood, Cole Atwood, Noah Atwood, Carter Lawyer and Randy McAlpin.
