Mary Alice
"Madie" Boyle Pharr
August 1, 1927 – December 15, 2020
Mary Alice "Madie" Boyle Pharr, 93, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at home after a recent reoccurrence of cancer.
Born on August 1, 1927, in the Airmount community of Yalobusha County, Miss., Mrs. Pharr was the second oldest of eight children. She married her sweetheart Thomas Edward Pharr Sr. there the day before her fifteenth birthday and spent the next 51 years building a family together. After his service in World War II, they briefly moved to Meridian, but eventually settled in Vicksburg, specifically the LeTourneau community, where they continued to rear their seven children. Mr. Pharr's long career with LeTourneau also led them to spend time in Glasgow, Scotland, and Brownsville, Texas, before returning home to Vicksburg. Later, they settled in the Yokena community and took up farming before his retirement.
Mrs. Pharr, who worked at Westinghouse for more than 10 years, enjoyed quilting, gardening and playing golf and traveling with her husband until his death in 1993. She was known for growing and canning her own muscadines and pears. Her famous "fried pies" were crowd favorites at family reunions, which they enjoyed hosting regularly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Maggie and E.O. Boyle Sr.; a sister Aline Martin; four brothers, Tommy Boyle, Frank Allen Boyle, Jim Boyle and E.O. Boyle Jr.; her husband, Thomas Edward Pharr Sr., two sons, Thomas Edward Pharr Jr. and Johnny Lee Pharr; a son-in-law Mike Kavanaugh, and grandson Bradley Tanner.
She is survived by her sister Margaret Sawner, of Olive Branch; a brother, Ralph (Rosie Lee) Boyle, of Vicksburg; three daughters, Sandra (Bob) Hollingsworth, Janie Kavanaugh, and Mary Joyce (Gary) Grant; all of VIcksburg; two sons, Larry (Cheryl) Pharr, of Hewitt, Texas, and Bobby (Susan) Pharr, of VIcksburg; as well as 16 grandchildren, more than 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 18 at 10 a.m. in Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery with Bro. Billy Brumfield of Immanuel Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project,
