Mattie Sue Ratliff Thomas passed through this life into God's hands on Saturday, March 7, 2026. She was born on August 30, 1932, to the late Robert Tillman Ratliff and Faudie Jewell Sipes Ratliff of Hardin County, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by six sisters, one brother, and an infant son, Steven Louis Thomas.
Having grown up on a small farm in Tennessee, she came to the big city of Vicksburg and started working at the lunch counter at Walgreens where she met the love of her life, Johnny G. Thomas, over a bowl of ice cream. They were married for 45 years before his passing in 1994. Together they had five children, Rhonda Thomas (Randy) Wright, Ellis (Laura) Thomas, Bill (Pat) Thomas, Richard (Peggy) Thomas and Gary (Dani Kay) Thomas. She was blessed to be "Mammaw" to 11 grandchildren, Randy (Jessica) Wright, Jr., Rebecca Wright (Mark) Antwine, Taylor Thomas (Waldon) Wolfe, Christian (Sarah) Thomas,Rachel Thomas (Andy) Anderton, Benjamin Thomas, Stephen (Jamie Baker) Thomas, Ann Garrison Thomas (Cole) Gary, Jaime (Skylar Johnson) Thomas, John Tillman Thomas and Jonathan Thomas, 10 great grandchildren, Kaylee Wright (Bryce) Bain, Jack Wright, Thomas Antwine, Mattie Sue Antwine, Jax Gary, Drew Anderton, Ellie Thomas, Ava Anderton, Ann Merritt Gary and William Thomas and 1 great,great grandchild (Kaylee & Bryce Bain) on the way.
Sue was a devoted member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church. She was a long time Sunday School teacher to many of the adults in the church who grew up calling her "Aunt Sue". As a life-long member of the "Women of St. George", she worked tirelessly on the annual Lebanese Dinner as the cabbage roll chairman.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation to the loving sitters who gave their time, love and respect to our precious mother. They all treated her like she was their own mother: IsabelleHeath, Rena Washington, Mattie Cole, Fatima Nash, Brittany Nash, Formeka Nash, Felicia Brisco and Ruthie Anderson. We would also like to thank Heidi, Jennifer and Tori with Enhabit Hospice and Morgan Caulfield,, PA-C with Medical Associates.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons: Randy Wright, Jr., Christian Thomas, Benjamin Thomas, Stephen Thomas, John Tillman Thomas, Jonathan Thomas, Jack Wright, Thomas Antwine and Drew Anderton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Antwine, Gregory Thomas, Lee Thomas, Jr., Mike George, Waldon Wolfe, Andy Anderton, Cole Gary, Skylar Johnson, and Bryce Bain.
Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 2709 Washington Street in Vicksburg. Visitation will be at the church from 9 am until the hour of service. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
