Obituary

Retha Estelle Deyoe entered eternal rest on December 7, 2023 at Heritage House Retirement Center.  She was 100 years old.  Mrs. Deyoe moved to Vicksburg in 1976 when she and her husband, Carrol F. Deyoe, purchased a farm north of Redwood, Mississippi.

The youngest of six children, Mrs. Deyoe was born July 23, 1923 on a farm in Greenacres, Washington to Johan Peterson Nyberg and Alma Harshbarger Nyberg.  As a child, she moved to Cripple Creek, Colorado where her father worked as a gold miner.  She soon moved back to the Spokane, Washington area where her father owned an apple and peach orchard.

Retha and Carrol were married in 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri.  They began an adventurous life as Carrol's job as an agricultural advisor for the United Nations and the Agency for International Development took them to many countries around the world.  She lived in Beirut, Lebanon; Damascus, Syria; Montevideo, Uruguay; Santiago, Chile; Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and San Salvador, El Salvador.  She and Carrol returned to the United States in 1971 to live in Vienna, Virginia.  In 1975, they retired to farming in Pocohontas, Arkansas and then to Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Retha was an independent woman with many interests and activities.  She loved playing her organ, playing bridge, gardening, sewing, and was a talented artist.  She enjoyed swimming and entertaining others in her pool. She was proud of her twenty years of service as a Pink Lady at River Region Hospital.

Retha is predeceased by her beloved husband, Carrol Francis Deyoe; her parents and five siblings: Harold Nyberg, Clarence Nyberg, Elizabeth Dammel, Annabelle Eisele, and Janette Snyder.

She is survived by her three sons: John Carrol Deyoe (Sherri); William Steven Deyoe (Jeanine); and Robert Scott Deyoe (Sharon).  She leaves a legacy of 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff and administration of Heritage House Retirement Center and Enhabit Hospice for their care and attendance, especially during the last month of Retha's life.  The family is especially grateful to Retha's care-givers: Beth Neff, Mona Denekas, Dana Coleman, and Sue Evans.   Their amazing care and love for Retha will always be appreciated.  A celebration of life is planned for 1PM on Wednesday, December 13, at Fisher - Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Ave., Vicksburg, Mississippi.
