Obituary

It is with great sadness the Verhoeven Family announces the passing of Gregg Verhoeven. Gregg died April 17, 2023 in Vicksburg, MS. He was a beloved husband of 42 years to Sherrie, and a loving father to Paige, Chelsea, and Derek. He was born in August 1960, a second son to proud parents Arnold and Sue Verhoeven, of Ocean Springs, MS. He was a cherished younger brother to Gary, and his wife Cheryl, cousin to Michael, and very special Nephew-in-law to Aunt Polly.
Gregg graduated Ocean Springs High School, Class of "78, as well as Mississippi Gulf Coast Jr College before joining the US Navy in 1980. He was a Nuclear Reactor Operator on the USS John Marshall, a US Navy Nuclear Submarine. While serving on the USS John Marshall, he trained with Navy Seals in Hawaii, qualified and served as boat scuba diver on his sub. He continued his career in Nuclear with Florida Power and Light, a career that spanned 36 years in leadership positions.
Gregg married Sherrie in 1981 and enjoyed many coast to coast deployments before settling in Florida in 1986. They fast became Florida "Natives", living in Miami, and Vero Beach, FL., for more than 36 years. In retirement they were building a dream home on the water in Florida. Gregg was helping to care for beloved Aunt Polly (97) in Vicksburg, MS, with whom he shared many laughs, stories, and nature walks. He was a dedicated father, raising his 3 amazing children, Paige (31) and twins, Chelsea and Derek (29). His entire family was everything to him. His life was full and happy with family trips, lobster diving, harvesting his coconuts!, sporting events, beach days, hiking, skateboarding, kayaking, surfing, boating, wearing denim on denim!, Bar-B-Ques, gardening, building and car shows with his family and so many friends. He was the dog whisperer and never met a dog, or their human, that didn't fall in love with him! And cats too!!! He loved working on his 70 Chevelle convertible, his "sleeper", which he owned for almost 45 years! He always confidently said with a smile, "You have to be pretty to be bald!" Gregg was strong, intelligent, funny, capable, loving, dedicated, true, and a man of few words.
There are simply no words to describe the sadness and loss of such a beloved man, husband, father, son, brother, and friend. May every soul who loved Gregg remember him for the wonderful person he was and the positive impact he had on their lives. Gregg will live forever in our hearts.
A private family memorial is planned. Condolences can be sent through Fisher-Riles Funeral Home in Vicksburg, Ms.
