Sylvia Jane
Calhoun
Jul 27, 1941 — Sep 11, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Sylvia Jane Calhoun, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Born in Hinds County, Jane was the beloved daughter of the late Lucien and Gertrude Pittman and sister to the late Willie Pittman. Jane was the loving wife of the late Charles C. Calhoun Jr.
Jane's life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and faith. A graduate of HV Cooper High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Jane furthered her education with distinction, graduating summa cum laude from Hinds Community College. She worked as a certified public secretary for over 30 years for the Army Corps of Engineers.
Jane was known for the deep love she held for her family, her church, and her dogs. Her daughters, Beth Calhoun Haller (Clay) and Catherine Calhoun (Trevor), were her pride and joy. She was also blessed with two grandchildren, Meredith Haller Regan (Ross), Christian Calhoun Watkins (Rachel) and one great-grandchild (Charlotte Jane Regan) who filled her life with love, laughter, and happiness.
As a dedicated member of Christ Episcopal Church, Jane was a Licensed Lay Worship Leader for the Diocese of Mississippi. She proudly served on the Altar Guild and shared communion with the homebound members of her congregation. If the doors of the church were open, Jane was there. Her commitment to her faith and her church family were unwavering.
Jane's passion for animals, particularly dogs, was a significant part of her life. She spent years running dog obedience training in Vicksburg and was a fervent advocate for abused and abandoned Rottweilers. Her 'heart dog,' Kiah, was a testament to her belief in second chances and unconditional love.
Surrounded by her daughters, son-in-law, and her grand dog Chilly, Jane left this world with the same grace and dignity with which she lived her life. Her legacy of love, faith, and compassion will continue to inspire all those who knew her.
With visitation beginning at 2:00PM, a service to celebrate Jane's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, located at 1115 Main Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180.
Beth, Catherine, Clay, and Trevor extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Laurel Senior Living Community in New Orleans for the exceptional love and care provided to Jane over the last six months. Jane Calhoun will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church Vicksburg, MS, the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society, or Southern States Rottweilers in honor of Jane's enduring love for her church and her passion for animal welfare.
