Obituary

Van Edwin Stewart, Sr.  was born in Vicksburg, MS to Dorothy E. Coody & Dave M. Stewart, Sr., the youngest of three children.  A 1967 graduate & star football player of Warren Central High School, he went on to enlist in the US Navy during the Vietnam conflict as an Interior Communications Electrician.

In 1974, he was married to Sue Comans o f Yazoo City, MS for 46 years, and settled back in his hometown of Vicksburg.  He was active in the community involved with Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and was a parishioner of St. Paul's Catholic Church.  After his retirement from the US Army Corps of Engineers (WES), Van enjoyed continuing to learn about history, having "dad jokes" at the ready for anyone who would listen, serving as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #898 & taking Sue to the boats when she got that winning feeling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sue, sons that brought him immense pride, Van Edwin, Jr. (Christine) of Omaha, NE & Jason (Patricia) of Lexington Park, MD, the best big sister he could've asked for, Kay Clark of Memphis, TN, as well as nine grandchildren who were each the apple of his eye.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Dave (Grove) M. Stewart Jr. Van had strong opinions that he was never shy to share, so if he counted you as a friend, or kept you as family, it was truly an honor.

Visitation will be held at Fisher- Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Ave.  from 9:00am to 10:30am on Tuesday, January 5,  followed by a graveside service at Cedar Hill Cemetery starting at 11:00am .
