Virginia Shirley Wendel Norton
November 7, 1925
July 8, 2020
Virginia Shirley Wendel Norton was born in Cincinnati, OH. She spent a childhood surrounded
by loving family, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with highest honors, receiving
a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. She contracted tuberculosis, and resided for 6 months at a
sanitarium, recovering from the disease.
She moved to Pennsylvania, met and married the love of her life, Pete, and became Educational
Administrator of the Bryn Mawr Hospital Medical Technology program.
After her retirement, she continued at the Bryn Mawr Hospital as a volunteer, working in the
library. She and Pete also faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. She loved all
kinds of music, especially Pete's jazz piano, and sang in the Wayne Oratorio Society.
She is remembered for her wry wit, spunk and energy for life, take charge attitude, and vast
knowledge of science.
She is predeceased by her parents, Hugo Otto Wendel and Julia Hammler Wendel, of Cincinnati,
OH, and her husband "Pete" Skeffington Sanxay Norton, III, of Devon, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Julia Hammler Wendel Scholarship Fund, at
the University of Cincinnati. This endowment provides scholarships to students pursuing
degrees in environmental sciences.
Interment will be in the St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley Churchyard, Malvern, PA, at a
later date.
