March 27, 1947 – January 11, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William Arna Garmon, Sr., fondly known as Bill, on January 11, 2025, at Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Born on March 27, 1947, in Lambert, Mississippi, Bill lived a life full of adventure, innovation, and unwavering love for family and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Ollie Lorance Garmon, Jr., a former Mississippi State Senator; his beloved mother, Lillian Tubb Garmon; and his sister, Mary Alice "Maggie" Garmon Monty.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Garmon, his cherished son, William A. Garmon, Jr. and wife Sherry, his siblings, O.L. "Dockie" Garmon, III, Loretta Martin, and Glenda Spiwak, and their families, as well as Carol's children, Oscar, Belinda, and Rene Velasquez, and numerous extended family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Bill's professional journey was as dynamic as his adventurous spirit. He co-owned a Radio Shack franchise with his brother, Dockie, cultivating their shared entrepreneurial spirit and love of innovation. He later transitioned to the petroleum industry, where he worked for many years before retiring as a service technician with Big D Irrigation in Greenwood, Mississippi.
A true thrill-seeker at heart, Bill embraced life's adventures with enthusiasm and courage. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, he became an avid skydiver, embodying his passion for exploring the unknown. In the early 1970s, he discovered scuba diving, which became a favorite pastime for many years. During this time, he was also active in hunting and fishing near Moon Lake, Mississippi, pursuits he enjoyed throughout his younger years.
Beyond his outdoor adventures, Bill expressed his creative side through music, often playing guitar for friends and family. A daredevil in ultralight aviation, he piloted the infamous Pterodactyl Ultralight and later found joy in flying radio-controlled airplanes and helicopters. An active ham radio enthusiast, he was well-known under his call sign, KC4ECB.
Bill will be remembered as a man of boundless curiosity, creativity, and warmth. His adventurous spirit, humor, and zest for life inspired all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched."
